Nothing is better after a long and stressful workday than to curl up in a cozy nook and forget the worries of the world. Whether it’s used for reading, snacking, or binging your favorite show, these compact spaces can be an oasis of comfort.
No matter the size or location, you can get creative with its design and make it a space that reflects your unique personality and style. This nook will be architectural proof that some of the best things come in small packages.
Finding a Purpose
Before you get your creativity flowing, the first step is knowing the intention of the nook. Will it be a naptime sanctuary, a tranquil yoga/meditation corner, or a private reading space?
Once you narrow down the purpose of your “me-time” area, it will be much simpler to decide the perfect way to build it. Don’t feel limited by the final decision. Simply use it as a guide, then do whatever you want in there once it’s finished. No one’s judging.
Large & in Charge
It can be as expansive or compact as your heart (and house) allows. Nooks are typically known to be on the smaller side – corners, under stairs, or in a closet, for example – but do whatever works for you and your home.
The important thing to remember is that this space should make you feel as if you are curled up in a warm hug and tucked away from the outside world. Your needs decide how big or small you want the embrace.
Bring it to Light
A calm and inviting nook can easily turn into a cold and sinister cave without proper lighting. Incorporating light does not mean you should overload the space with excessive lamps and sconces, but using a soft glow will elevate the atmosphere of this treasured spot.
If possible, build your nook next to a window with airy curtains so its natural light can delicately sweep over the space and give it warmth and life. In seconds you’ve made a stuffy and hollow cave into an irresistible refuge. No one wants to relax next to a family of bats.
Build a Foundation
Once you have determined the location and purpose of your nook, begin the process of building it with proper seating. This all depends on what you want out of the space. If you’re planning on catching some midday Z’s, try using a small sleeper sofa or futon. For the book nerds out there, invest in a cozy armchair.
Build up the area with the nook’s necessities, so you barely need to move a finger once you’ve settled. You can include an end table for your coffee or an ottoman to rest your feet. Framing the area with shelving will also add a little extra storage for all your needs.
Comfort is Key
What’s the point of this area if it isn’t cozy? Bring in all the comfort essentials: throw pillows, blankets, stuffed animals (if necessary). This is your space of serenity to fill with all the items that make you happy.
Blankets aren’t all it takes to keep you snug as a bug in a rug, however. Rugs, for instance, work wonders at making the corner look warm and welcoming. Mixing in different textures and textiles will give the space the cuddliest of atmospheres.
Touch of Style
This is the fun part where you can let your personality shine. Bring in the touches of flair that spark joy, like your favorite Tibetan singing bowl or your elegant marble vase. Stock up the shelves with the books you want to read or the vinyl records you’re excited to play.
Incorporate a few plants to liven up the nook or some candles to mellow out the vibe and create a place of freedom and vitality. Let your creativity flow as you accessorize your space.
What’s the Point?
As irresistible as this haven seems, many would argue that it could be excessive and unnecessary to invest in a space that has no “real” use. What those people fail to see, however, is that taking an area of dead space and repurposing it into a corner of repose for the good of your mental health is possibly more valuable than any other area of the home.
Do not feel ashamed of investing in yourself and creating an escape that could potentially be the room you spend most of your time in – for half the size.
