2022 Trends for Indoor & Outdoor Living

January 26, 2022

Over the last couple of years, we’ve grown accustomed to spending a great deal of our day at home, and because of this, we require more out of our surroundings. Our workspace needs to exude an energy of productivity, while our living room must radiate tranquility and comfort. As we settle into this new year – and avoid the nagging threat of cabin fever – the itch for an upgrade has already begun to pester us.

Research & Development

Interior design trends are developing faster than ever before, and because our time is now spent indoors, many seek to bring the outdoors in and vise-versa. Neutral colors, organic materials, and sustainable pieces are making their way into homes across the country. It’s time for your “new year, new home” interior glow-up.

Fifty Shades of Brown

As we continue to create spaces of sanctuary and serenity, there has been a push towards rich and organic tones that emulate the refuge of nature. From deep chocolate browns, warm terracotta, and light caramels to soft creams and beiges, these inviting neutral hues have become a staple in contemporary homes.

Woods of Wisdom

You can also find browns in the structural elements of wooden floors and stone countertops, as well as decor pieces made up of natural materials, such as rattan, leather, and jute. This color palette can be incorporated in many interior styles such as farmhouse, Scandinavian, Japandi, and Transitional. The trend creates a comforting and welcoming space that invites you to cozy up and relax.

Au Naturel

Along with the colors of nature, we have also started incorporating natural materials in furniture and decor. Marble and travertine find their way in our bathrooms, while terracotta and stoneware show up in our living rooms. From backsplashes to bathtubs, the outside world has made its way into our homes.

What’s Good for the Green

Over the past year, there has been a rise in biophilic interior design that revitalizes our connection with nature. This includes large windows that allow natural light to brighten up the space and seamlessly link the indoor and outdoor spaces. You’ll also see a sparked interest in large trees inside the home, like olive and magnolia.

Love the Touch

Incorporating organic decor opens the door to a variety of new textures and textiles. Items made from bamboo and rattan are normally seen in bohemian-styled homes but have gained popularity in other design styles as well. There has also been a rise in whimsical influences such as reeded cabinets and scalloped accent chairs.

Dimension to Dimension

This call to natural materials encourages the inclusion of raw and imperfect pieces that add depth and soul to the space. These elements add a subtle dimensionality in the most minimal of designs and create a unique and inviting environment. The beauty of these materials is their ability to express personality in an elegant and organic way while also mimicking the calm ambiance of the outdoors.

Gets Better with Age

A trend that has both taken over the fashion industry and interior design world is the resurgence of using vintage pieces. The appeal comes from the growing influence of nostalgia and the appreciation of sustainable consumerism.

These items can be repurposed, or “flipped”, after purchasing them second-hand in order to save money and upcycle dated furniture instead of wasting the resources necessary to manufacture a new one. They can also be left as is to create an eclectic and one-of-a-kind touch to any contemporary design.

There’s Nothing Like the Oldies

Antiquities are rare treasures that can be utilized in modern homes to not only create a unique and warm space but also bring a piece of history and spirit as well. Using vintage is also a great way to make a guilt-free purchase that also plays a part in helping the planet.

Curves in the Right Places

This year, there will be a shift in the harsh edges and angles of previous design trends, and we’ll start seeing softer shapes and curved lines. Comfort and safety have become a top priority in our society, therefore our interior design will represent this outlook by introducing round sculptural furniture and decor pieces.

These shapes are subconsciously welcoming and embody elegance without intimidation. The style is particularly complimentary to mid-century designs and is most likely found in the curved backs of sofas, dining chairs, and end tables but can also be seen in architectural elements like arched cabinetry and entrances.

Inside Out

As we bring the glory of nature inside of our homes, we take the domestic elements outside. Hosting outdoor events has become more common, so there’s been more effort made to bring the comfort of home into the backyard. Patios become an extension of the interior decor with sophisticated furniture and modern pieces.

Continuation of a warm neutral palette elevates and accentuates the greenery of the outdoor space. Cane furniture is a popular addition because of its durability against the elements and its rustic aesthetic. Small backyards can get a makeover by using minimal pieces and even vertical gardens that utilize the space creatively and efficiently.
