How to Get Out of a Rut: Five Creative Ways to Re-Engage Your Mojo

January 14, 2022

Now and then, we can find ourselves moving through life in a fog and following a monotonous routine. Indifference eclipses our motivation, and complacency overshadows ambition. Sure our situation isn’t the best, but it isn’t the worst either, and even if we question our position, we lack the drive to change anything. Sound familiar? If so, you may have fallen into an emotional rut.

No matter the age, career, or current life situation, it is a state of being that many can relate to. If you are ready to get out of it, the first step is garnering enough willpower to take action. When you have finally built up the motivation to make a change, then you can check out these five ideas to pull you out of the rut for good!

Take a Look Inside

Self-reflection will look different for everyone. Some people choose to journal, others decide to meditate. If your resources allow it, reaching out to a professional would help guide the process, but it is perfectly achievable on your own. Ask yourself about the areas of your life that feel inadequate. Perhaps your job feels like a dead-end, or the city you live in has lost its charm.

The source can prove to be a little more complex, but taking the time for some soul searching can allow you to focus your energy on changing or removing the specific stresses or environment that has left you feeling emotionally depleted. Diagnosing the problem will make it easier to find the cure.

Revisit Your Hobbies

Often, life loses its luster when we lose our sense of self. Our busy schedules take over our personal interests, and we are left feeling like a cog in a machine rather than an individual. It is easy to put ourselves at the bottom of our priority list, but getting out of this rut will take a shift in perspective.

Engaging in the activities that inspire creativity will ignite a fire of ambition, or at the very least will introduce a little fun back into your life. Maybe you used to write poetry, or ride horses, or dance. Even something as simple as listening to an audiobook can stimulate your mind and give you an escape from the dullness of routine.

Care About Self-Care

Pulling yourself up from the bottom of the checklist may seem like a waste of time or energy, but engaging in self-care practices will boost your self-esteem, improve your state of mind, and heighten your motivation. Perhaps you have grown accustomed to rolling out of bed without adequate sleep and splashing some cold water on your face before slumping into your home office with a cup of bitter coffee and sweatpants.

The past couple of years has forced us to adapt to a more remote lifestyle. Transitioning came with many benefits but also had some drawbacks. Losing the incentive to follow a proper morning routine was one of them.  In this journey out of the rut, implement some. of the healthy habits you used to participate in. Maybe skincare was your oasis or starting the day with a healthy breakfast. Even taking pride in the outfit you put together can do wonders for your productivity. It is okay to look and feel good when no one is watching.

Re-Examine Your Goals

If you have found yourself in a rut, it is unlikely that you have landed where you always wanted to be. Even if you have, it is human nature to evolve and progress, so take another moment to evaluate yourself and all the aspirations you used to have. If those goals no longer fit your preferred lifestyle, it is time to jot down some new ones. No dream is too far out of reach because life always allows room to grow.

Re-examining your goals will not only guide you toward a satisfying life but will also ignite your sense of purpose. To avoid feeling overwhelmed or burned out, start small, like a change in your diet or level of exercise. Maybe your goal is to get a full eight hours of sleep. Eventually, the small achievements will motivate you to think bigger until you are on your way to bringing your real dreams to fruition.

Take a Break

Sometimes the best way to clear your mind and evaluate your goals is to take some time away from your responsibilities. A break could mean a ten-minute walk, a two-hour lunch, or even a whole weekend getaway. In a rut, your mind and body are stuck in a routine that puts you on auto-pilot.

Switching gears and breaking the monotony will boost your creative energy and help you live more proactively. Taking a short vacation to regroup will help clear your mind to examine your priorities. After recess is over, you will return renewed and ready to rediscover your purpose.
